His father was Sharada Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi. He also had elder sister named Kailashi Devi. He was born to a Kayastha family and studied in Urduas most of the family of this group did. 

He began his studies at the age of 4 by a Maulvi, Budhan Mia  at East Center Railway Inter College 

in Mughal Sarai till 6th standard.

After it he went Varanasi's school Harish Chandra High School where he left his cast surname Srivastava. 

He became Prime Minister on 9 June 1964

• At the time of a rail accident he resigned as a rail minister.
• He made the Green Revolution in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
• When Servant of India Society gives 50 Rs monthly. She when send the post that she can take the responsibities with 40 Rs and saves 10 Rs then Shashtri ji  sent a letter to Lala Lajpat Rai that please send 40 Rs to my home and save the other 1O Rs for other freedom fighters. 
• When his daughter was sick he asked the jailor for a Parole of 15 days but Jailorgave him of 21 days. When reached home his daughter got dead and he then returned jail in one day saying that the work was over that made him to take Parole. 
• He sent his children in Bullock Cart to school not in his car.
• He also went to buy grocery items himself.
• He stand in the line of the parents while taking report card.
• His wife even after his death repayed the loan with his pension.
